In a recent move towards the prevention of a mass exodus of migrant workers amid the second wave of Coronavirus, the Delhi Government has announced an immediate relief of Rs 5,000 for the registered construction workers. The Delhi government will also provide for the food, shelter, medications, and other necessities during the lockdown.
In the wake of the resurgent Coronavirus, the migrant workers are crowding the railway stations and bus terminals. The State government had formed a high-level committee to oversee the relief work and suggest ways to stop the migration.
The Lt Governor of Delhi made an appeal to the workers not to leave the city and assured them of all assistance during the challenging times. According to an announcement by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, we propose to provide financial assistance of Rs 5,000 each to the registered construction workers as COVID relief from April 20, 2021. The registration and renewal process is reopened, and the newly added workers will also be covered.
At present, Delhi has over 1.70 lakh registered construction workers. In the past instances of lockdown, the government had provided assistance of Rs 5,000 to over 55,000 registered construction workers.
